Chapter Eight

Qrora’s head stung. Was it stress? Dehydration? He stumbled towards the map table and reached for a glass of water. The others seemed to be a similar state of distress. Could it be a new weapon unleashed by the enemy? He had a brief thought, an image in his mind. What if he left with his parents?

The image was fading, like waking up from a dream, but he felt like he could clearly see himself leaving the fleet behind from his father’s shoulders. For a brief moment, it seemed real.

“Is everyone alright?” Tanner asked as the gathered leaders nodded and recovered. “Then let’s get on with it.” The enemy seemed gathered around two points: the ship over Pheonix and a base the human leaders identified as an Air Force base. Everywhere else, the enemy was spread thin, interested in maintaining a perimeter, but not much else.

“Their perimeter is ironclad,” one of the generals said. “That being said, they’re no longer advancing, so let’s establish what we know.”

“Their technology is similar to M’Nok tech,” Qrora said. “That being said, they have advances in robotics we’ve never tapped, at least as far as I’m aware, and I’m not sure what those other foot soldiers were, but they possessed an incredible ability to regenerate damage.” The gathered generals nodded.

“They have exceptional air support,” another said. “Even if we get close to the ship over Phoenix, I don’t think our forces will last long in the face of their airpower.” Qrora looked up at them.

“We have millions of M’nok still in orbit, as well as a number of humans, that are essentially hostages without the AIs to run communications,” he said. “If we can integrate our AIs with your air and ground forces, it would give us a descive edge over the enemy.” He saw the skepticism in the human leaders and raised his hands. “Imagine your current systems, your networks, and all the data your soldiers need to enter, all the reports they need to verbally call up, imagine if they no longer needed to give you an oral report over the radio, or listen to an oral explanation from higher, you and your leaders have access to all of the relevant information you need, instantly, and indexed for your reference, we tested this with the human based-AI Mike Junior and have had great success, the reason we’re not using them now is that they’re already spread thin.”

“What would we need to enact this?” the commander of 1st Cavalry Division asked. “Do we need to mess with our systems? Make retro fits to our vehicles?”

Qrora shook his head. “We just need them to carry an AI proto-core, essentially a digital embryo, either in a vehicle or with a squad. That’s all that they need to interface with an AI.” He looked over at Captain Tanner. “We should ask Roberto how many proto-cores we have and if they’ve figured out how to wake up the AIs.” The SF Captain nodded and went to the radio bank.
